Choosing Your Leather Pants

Leather pants are the hardest garment we make to fit and the most rewarding when the fit is right. We use soft lambskin throughout — cowhide is too rigid to sit and walk in comfortably, and stretch-backed leather loses its shape at the knee within a season.

Straight-leg and joggers are the easiest cuts to get right. Skinny and leggings are the most demanding.

Fit & Sizing

Four measurements decide the outcome: waist, hip, rise and inseam, plus thigh for closer cuts. Rise and inseam are the two most often guessed, and they determine whether the waistband sits at your waist and the hem falls where you want it. Neither can be corrected after cutting.

The easiest method is to measure a pair of trousers you already own and like, laid flat. Send everything through before ordering and we will check it against the cut you have chosen.

Leather Pants Through the New Zealand Seasons

Lambskin pants work from March through October here. Joggers and wide-leg cuts are comfortable on cooler summer evenings. Mid-summer is the one time we would suggest a skirt or shorts instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should leather pants fit?

Snug at the waist, comfortable through the hip and thigh, with enough room to sit down without pulling at the seams. Leather softens with wear but does not stretch across the thigh, so a pair that pulls when new will keep pulling.

Less than most people expect. Lined lambskin breathes reasonably and is comfortable in New Zealand’s temperate conditions from autumn through spring.

Waist, hip, rise, inseam and thigh. Rise and inseam are the two most often guessed wrong and the two that cannot be corrected after cutting. Send them before ordering and we will check them.

They soften and mould to your shape, particularly at the knee and hip, but they do not grow a size. Buy to your actual measurements rather than sizing down and hoping.
